Draughts throughout the house will move the hot air from where you want it to where you don’t. As renters, we can’t change the house to stop draughts completely, but it’s pretty easy to reduce them.
Segregating the house reduces draughts through the house making it lose less heat. Just close doors between rooms when you’re heating the house. The rooms warm faster and remain hot for longer.
Savings are hard to calculate but the energy saving trust estimates around £20 per person with 100 kg CO2 avoided. Not bad for just shutting the f****** door.
There are also hidden benefits to closing the door – like keeping the moisture produced through condensation where it belongs, so it can be released through windows, instead of it spreading through the house and creating damp smelly walls. Simple but effective!
